Anthony Seminerio, the first Democrat in 27 years to be elected Assemblyman
from the district in which he first ran, was born February 15, 1935 in New
York City. He attended Brooklyn Prep, and was awarded a B.S. degree from
the New York State Institute of Technology in 1978.
Until his election to the Assembly in November 1978 Assemblyman Seminerio
served as a Correction Officer in the New York City Corrections System.
While a Correction Officer, Mr. Seminerio also served as a union executive
board member for the Corrections Officers Benevolent Association. In that
capacity, he represented his fellow workers in grievance procedures and
served as a liaison between the union and the institutional commander. Upon
his election to the executive board in 1972, he was involved extensively
in contract negotiations and in lobbying efforts in Albany and Washington
on behalf of union-related legislation and aid to New York City. He has
had a career commitment to upgrading the status, training and benefits of
professional penologists on all levels. He was collective bargaining negotiator
for Department of Correction members with City of New York: 1st Vice-President,
Corrections Officers Benevolent Association, 1971-1978. Seminerio was also
a founder and treasurer of the New York State Peace Officers Association.
His experience as a Correction Officer has led him to be an active sponsor
of more stringent penalties for criminals.
Seminerio maintains two district offices. Among his community achievements
were the securing of funding for the first full-service senior citizens
center in Queens and getting construction resumed on a long-overdue library
for the Forest Park community. His dedication to his community has earned
him many awards including Man of the Year from the Crime Victims Political
Platform and the Queens Soccer Club. In addition, he has received Achievement
Awards from the Long Island Correctional Association, the Columbia Association
of Corrections Officers and the Forest Park Senior Citizens Center, to name
a few.
Assemblyman Seminerio and his wife, the former Catherine McCormick, have
three children, John, Anna and Mabel. They reside in South Ozone Park, where
he is involved in the Holy Name Society of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, the
Boy Scouts, the Columbia Association of the Department of Corrections, New
York State PTA and other community affairs. Known for his outspoken candor,
Seminerio has also become a notable talk radio show host in the New York
City area.
In January 1993 he was appointed Majority Whip. He is also a part-time movie
character actor.
Committee assignments: Banks, Governmental Employees, Racing and Wagering,
Cities and Higher Education.
