Gregory W. Meeks was elected to the New York State Assembly in 1992. He
represents the communities of Far Rockaway, Rosedale, Laurelton, Richmond
Hill, South Ozone Park, and Springfield Gardens. Assemblyman Meeks, a full-time
legislator, is fully committed to bridging communities together, and devoted
to a legislative program focused on youth, health, education and economic
development.
Gregory W. Meeks was born to James and Mary Meeks, a matrimony determined
to provide the Meeks family a better opportunity. Having been born and raised
in East Harlem, New York, he attended the local public schools, and lived
in public housing during his formative years. Upon his graduation from Julia
Richman High School, he enrolled and continued his pursuit for knowledge
at Adelphi University. Gregory Meeks graduated and received a Bachelor of
Arts degree from Adelphi University in 1975, and earned his Juris Doctorate
at Howard University's Law School in 1978.
Upon his graduation from law school, Mr. Meeks obtained an Assistant District
Attorney position at the Queens County District Attorney's Office. He successfully
prosecuted major felony cases and consequently, was promoted to work in
the Office of Special Narcotic Prosecutor where he aided in the prosecution
of several important narcotic cases resulting in convictions. In 1984, Mr.
Meeks joined the New York State Commission of Investigation where he directed
criminal and civil investigations of public officials, state employees,
and major organized crime figures. In 1985, he was appointed to serve as
a Judge for the State of New York Workers' Compensation Board. He was rapidly
promoted to the position of Supervising Judge, and remained in that post
until his election to the New York State Assembly, where he serves on the
Committees on Codes, Environmental Conversation, Insurance, Small Business,
and Governmental Operations. In addition, Gregory Meeks is Chairman of the
Subcommittee on Workers' Compensation Administrative Operations, and a member
of the Task Force on Workers' Compensation, the Black and Puerto Rican Legislative
Caucus, the Puerto Rican/Hispanic Task Force, and the Legislative Task Force
on African American Issues. Also, Gregory Meeks holds the prestigious post
of Chairman of the Council of Black Elected Democrats (C.O.B.E.D.), a state-wide
organization comprised of Black Elected Officials, at all levels of government,
within the State of New York.
As a strong advocate for social, political and economic involvement, Gregory
Meeks has spearheaded efforts aimed at addressing the social, political
and economic needs and realities of the residents of the State of New York.
He became involved in the political arena in 1984, when he founded the Jesse
L. Jackson Independent Democratic Club of the Rockaways, which has evolved
into the Thurgood Marshall Regular Democratic Club, Inc.
Mr. Meeks, known as Greg to his many friends, is the proud sibling of one
younger brother, John, two younger sistersRosalyn and Janella, and the proud
father of two daughtersEbony and Aja. Mr. Meeks is a member of Alpha Phi
Alpha Fraternity, Inc., and a deacon at St. John's Baptist Church.
