Brian M. McLaughlin, a resident of Flushing for over 20 years, was born
in the Inwood section of Manhattan on April 30, 1952. Mr. McLaughlin joined
the electrical union training program as an apprentice after graduating
from Brentwood High School on Long Island. He became a journeyman electrician
in 1977. While working in the electrical industry, he continued his education,
receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree from Empire State College of the
State University of New York and a Master's Degree in Industrial Labor Relations
from the New York Institute of Technology.
In the Legislature, Assemblyman McLaughlin represents the 25th Assembly
District, which is made up of portions of the neighborhoods of Flushing
and Whitestone in Queens County. Assemblyman McLaughlin's district is one
of the most ethnically, culturally, and economically diverse communities
in the country. Assemblyman McLaughlin's legislative priorities include
the rebuilding of New York's aging infrastructure to promote economic development
and job growth; criminal justice reform; housing; and programs and services
for older adults.
For his community service, Assemblyman McLaughlin has been honored by numerous
community organizations including the East Flushing Civic Association, the
Coalition for a Planned Flushing, the Flushing Council on Culture and the
Arts, the Greater Whitestone Taxpayers Civic Association, the Benjamin Rosenthal
Chapter of the American Jewish Congress, Flushing Hospital Medical Center,
the Kiwanis Club of Flushing, the American Cancer Society, the Boy Scouts
of America, the William Leonard Post of the American Legion, the 107th Precinct
Community Council, the New York Branch of the NAACP, and the National Council
of Young Israels.
Before his election to the Assembly in 1992, Mr. McLaughlin served as Pension
Director of the electrical industry, where he was responsible for securing
pension benefits for 3,000 senior citizens. He was also active in his community
as a member of the Board of Directors of the Queens Overall Economic Development
Corporation, a member of Community Board 8, an officer of the Electchester
Athletic Association, and a Democratic District Leader.
Outside of the Legislature, Assemblyman McLaughlin has been a leading figure
in New York's labor movement for more than two decades. He currently serves
as the President of the New York City Central Labor Council, an umbrella
organization of unions representing more than 1.5 million working men and
women, and has been a Business Representative of Local Union 3 of the International
Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, AFL-CIO.
Assemblyman McLaughlin is a member of the Assembly's Standing Committees
on Aging; Alcoholism and Drug Abuse; Banks; Cities; Corporations, Authorities
and Commissions; and Transportation as well as the Majority Task Force on
High Speed Rail.
Assemblyman McLaughlin has two children, Brian and Kelly. He and his wife,
Eva, are homeowners in the Queensborough Hill section of Flushing.
