The Queens Symphony Orchestra (QSO) was founded in 1953 and is the oldest
and largest performing arts organization in Queens. It provides an array
of programs: a series of classical subscription concerts, concerts for young
people, an in-school music education program, a youth gospel choir, an annual
competition for young instrumentalists, free parks concerts, open rehearsals
and a music referral service. In 1994, QSO launched an Audience Development
program which aims to bring residents of ethnic diversity into the concert
hall. The establishment of the Youth Gospel Choir is a product of this program.
